The different metal planes: an overview
The smoothing plane has a pistol grip and a smaller knob. In the handle there is a lever for lateral adjustment of the plane iron, as well as a small plate for adjustment of the chip thickness.
The metal smoothing planes all have a mouth adjustment. Fine adjustment of the iron is possible by means of a knurled head screw, a side lever allows lateral adjustment of the iron.
The one-handed plane, also called block plane, has instead of a handle only lateral recessed grips for one-handed operation. With the one-handed plane, the mouth of the plane opens and closes. Hardly any other plane is as universal and handy as the small iron one-handed plane.
