Laguna woodturning lathes for professionals and private users
As a craft, woodturning looks back on a very long history. At the beginning of this history were lathes that were operated by human power. One form of this lathe has survived to this day and is sometimes used for a specialised area of woodturning: Some woodturners who work with green wood (i.e. wood that has not been dried) do so on a rocker lathe. It is usually built from wood by the woodturner himself and is therefore light and can usually be dismantled.
Construction of the Laguna woodturning lathes
An (electrically operated) wood lathe should be as stable and heavy as possible for professional use and for the demanding private user. This requirement is due to a fundamental difference between the wood lathe and other stationary woodworking machines: In contrast to a table saw, for example, the workpiece on a lathe is moved by the machine's motor. This rotation sometimes takes place at quite high speeds, which can result in large centrifugal forces. In addition, the blanks are sometimes very heavy and, especially in the initial stages of machining, more or less irregularly shaped, which can lead to vibrations. Both factors require a heavy weight and a stable construction of the lathe to counteract them.
Our Laguna lathes meet this requirement - even the medium-sized Revo 1216 model weighs a remarkable 56 kg (more than 90 kg with base), and the top model Revo 2436 weighs 242 kg!
The stability and precision of the construction of Laguna lathes leaves nothing to be desired. The frame, the height-adjustable legs, the headstock and the hand rest are made of cast iron. The bench bed of the two larger lathes is made of steel and precision ground, on the Revo 1216 the bed is made of cast iron.
Power and size of the lathes from Laguna
The lathes differ in size and power to meet different requirement profiles in each case. The smallest lathe, the Revo 1216, with an (expandable) centre width of 390 mm, is suitable for carpenters and joiners who want to turn furniture handles and the like, and for turners who limit themselves to small objects (such as pens, turning spinning tops, small cans, etc.). It is designed as a table model, so can be placed on a workbench unless you prefer to fit it with the Revo 1216 base, available as an accessory, for a stand-alone solution.
With a top width of 914 mm, the Revo 1836 lathe is our standard model for commercial woodturners and home users who work with larger and heavier blanks. As with the Revo 1216 and Revo 2436, the bench bed can be extended to give even greater widths between centres.
The largest lathe, the Revo 2436, is particularly suitable for making extremely heavy and large objects due to its design (very heavy base, large dimensions). The centre width is (expandable) 965 mm, the maximum diameter above the bench bed 609 mm. The total weight of the lathe of almost a quarter of a tonne ensures the necessary smooth running even with very heavy workpieces. A second control panel on the tailstock side facilitates operation with long workpieces.
The motors on all three models are generously dimensioned at 0.75 kW, 1.5 kW and 2.2 kW for the respective maximum size of the workpieces, so that they deliver high torques. The speed can be adjusted in steps or continuously between 50 and 3500 rpm.
Ergonomics of the Laguna lathes
Laguna lathes are designed for the highest possible ergonomics. For example, there are lifting blocks as accessories for the two larger models, which are fitted under the frame and raise the turning axis to a height of 1130. The tailstock lock is at the rear, where it is easy to reach but does not interfere with the work. Ergonomically shaped handles are used here as elsewhere. The control panel made of anodised aluminium is equipped with an easy-to-read digital display. The Revo 2436 comes with a second control panel that is attached to the tailstock side and simplifies the machining of long workpieces. Holes are pre-drilled on the headstock side for mounting a light.
Scope of delivery of the Laguna lathes
All three lathe models are supplied with the necessary basic equipment. This includes:
- Driver tip
- Centre punch point
- Faceplate
- Hand rest
- Mandrel with brass tip
- Key for spindle lock
For the two larger woodturning machines this is supplemented by:
- Base frame
- Arm for lighting
The Revo 2436 is also supplied with a second control panel and associated steel holder.
