The spiral groove, as known from classic twist drills, enables a continuous pulling cut. This leads to significantly less vibration than classic end mills with vertical cutting edges.

Difference between right-hand and left-hand twist

Right-hand spiral groove cutters are particularly suitable for a clean milling base and transport chips away quickly and safely to the top. However, chipping may occur on the top of the workpiece. Left-hand spiral groove cutters, on the other hand, prevent tear-out on the top of the workpiece, but push the chips downwards onto the groove base.
